Leningrad: Izd. Akademii khudozhestv, 1927. 28, [4] pp., 38 ills. 28,5x22 cm. In original illustrated cardboards. Rubbed and bumped, same pale stains on the lower margins and ink marks, otherwise very good.
First and only edition. One of 1500 copies.
Design of covers, initial, head and tail pieces are produced by well-known book designer Alexander Leo. The publishing house logo is designed by artist P. Shillingovskii.
The bibliophile and art historian Erich Gollerbakh (1895-1942) headed Art Department of Leningrad Gosizdat since 1923. Basing on own experience, Gollerbakh analyzed 1920s book covers stating them the most developed field in the Soviet graphical art. He gathered 75 designs by 24 artists, chiefly relating to Leningrad school of the book design. The reproductions demonstrated his classification of the contemporary cover designs which he divided by techniques, art methods and styles, number of colours, place of lettering, etc.
