After the Russian tsar, Alexander II, narrowly escaped assassination on April 16, 1866, Congress passed a joint resolution on May 16 that expressed a deep personal sympathy and solidarity with Russia, reinforced by the terrible memory of Lincoln's assassination the year before. Gustavus Fox (1821-1883), an officer of the US Navy, was chosen to convey the message personally to Russia.
This book gives a detailed description of one of the evenings of Fox's visit to Russia with accounts of the warm welcoming reception he and his team were given there.
Judging by the owner's stamp, the book belonged to Fyodor Aleksandrovich Vitberg (1846-1919), the Russian writer, bibliographer, and collector of Russian historical documents.
