The first Russian edition of A Clockwork Orange, published in May 1991 (the month before the collapse of the Soviet Union). The challenge for the translator was to handle Burgess’s unique fictional register, so-called Nadsat. In Nadsat (derived from the Russian for “teen”) all the words had a Russian origin and double meanings. A.Boshniak decided to give these words in Roman characters without translating them in an attempt to replicate for Russian readers the experience of English readers.
