This is the book written after two trips of the Soviet architects to the United States during the post-war period and in the beginning of the Cold War. The American experience in civil engineering was recorded for the large-scale construction campaign during Khrushchev’s Thaw.
In 1955, the group of architects Koziulia, Vlasov, Galitskii, Dubrovin, Isaev, Lysenko, Liachkova, Spyshnova, Timofeeva, Sheveleva visited the houses in 50 cities and towns all over the USA. In 1956, the second group, included Svetlichnyi, Abramov, Baranov, Dorokhov, Petrovskii, attended the international exhibition in New York. Apart from the exhibits, the visitors were attracted to explore the structure of schools, hospitals and trade buildings in New York. Both events together laid the foundation of this richly illustrated book.
The materials are divided into four sections: the general data of American construction; housing; building the cultural and living spaces; sanitary and technic equipment for the houses and civil buildings. The authors scrupulously marked the construction methods, design of rooms, types of devices, used materials, etc. Everything they saw in the USA was photographed and drawn.
In 1956, the USSR hosted the American architects’ delegation as well.
