Three colorful books created by one of the amazons of the Russian avant-garde, Alexandra Exter (1882-1949). She primarily was a theatrical designer and artist - Tairov remembered that the origins of Kamerny Theater were tightly connected to her art. This theatrical experience influenced her book design. Left the Soviet Union for the 1924 Venice Biennale, she emigrated to France where temporarily turned to children’s books. She created four striking editions for Paris publishing house ‘Flammarion’ that became a part of the book series ‘Albums du Père Castor’, well-known for Russian emigre contributors: Exter, Parain, Bilibin, Rojankovsky and others. Apart from the first book ‘Mon Jardin’, she co-created three panorama views resembling motifs of her 1930s paintings as well as stage designs. Each of these books was focused on education via colorful pictures. Combining images of different places in France, they provided her composition aesthetics and dynamics. The books were met enthusiastically and reprinted many times in various languages.
Worldcat shows copies of all three editions in Library of Congress, Princeton, Yale, Amherst, Miami University. Copies of Panorama Du Fleuve are also at Los Angeles Public Library, National Louis University, The University of Chicago, NYPL, University of Southern California, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
