First and lifetime edition of the libretto. Very rare. Italian and Russian text were published in parallel.
This opera was composed by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) in 1867. Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was adapted by poets Jules Barbier (1825-1901) and Michel Carré (1822-1872).
The work was printed among other performances of Italian opera staged in St. Petersburg. Apart from ‘Romeo and Juliet’, only ‘Faust’ by the collaboration of this trio succeeded in Russia.
