St. Petersburg: The Academy of Science, 1789. [54], 633, [7] pp., 17 leaves of folding plans, schemes and maps. Contemporary full leather. Spine is restored, otherwise very good. Modern sticker on the spine. The stamp of the private library of Ivan Pavlov on the last page. Previous provenance: Yakov Schetinin (late 17th cent. inscription), lieutenant Chaikovsky (1902, the inscription on the front endpaper).
Extremely rare. The only copy of this edition is recorded in the Harvard College Library (according to the WorldCat).
An important translation of Jérôme Lalande’s ‘‘‘Astronomie’’ (2nd edition, 1781), which became one of the first books in Russian on astronomy and the first one to give a general overview of the subject.
Prior to this academic publication, few books were written and translated including Fyodor Saimonov’s ‘‘Kratkoe izyasnenie ob astronomii’’ (1765) and Lomonosov’s publications, including his observations on Venus.
Apart from those, most of the books on the subject were closer to astrology than astronomy.
The translator of this text, Mikhail Golovin (1756-1790), was Mikhail Lomonosov’s nephew and protege. He has contributed to Russian pedagogy by complying four textbooks - on mechanics, arithmetics, geometry and trigonometry, all becoming either first written by a Russian or one of the firsts on the subject.
His textbook on mechanics was approved by Leonhard Euler.
