A collection of twenty-seven beautiful large watercolour views taken by a British traveller during an early dahabiya cruise up the Nile in November 1864 – February 1865. The traveller arrived at Alexandria on November 17 and took a classic Nile voyage, reaching slightly beyond the Second Cataract, and returning to Middle Egypt on February 6. The watercolours create a lyrical picture of the Nile as it was known since antiquity and before the construction of the 20th-century dams, which had changed its landscape forever. The collection starts with a skyline of Alexandria taken from the sea and continues with the views of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Pyramids of Saqqara and the nearby Serapeum necropolis, ancient quarries at Tora and Gebel el-Tair (with the Coptic Convent of the Pulley seen on top of the cliffs), the ancient site of the Thebes, Nile’s banks and cliffs, including a beautiful three-part panorama of the “Aboo Faydee, the highest rocks between Cairo & the 2nd Cataract” (near modern-day Asyut). Very interesting are seven views showing the Second Cataract and the temples of Upper Egypt and Lower Nubia, which have been flooded or relocated during the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s: Gerf Hussein, Dakka, Qasr Ibrim (the only major archaeological site in Lower Nubia to survive the Nile flooding during the dam construction, turned into an island), Amada, Nile banks near Wadi Sabua, and Dabod [?]. There is also a large beautiful watercolour of the interior of the Tomb of Ramesses III in the Valley of the Kings (Bruce’s Tomb) and atmospheric views of the Nile valley near the Beni Hasan necropolis and the Speos Artemidos temples. Overall a beautiful collection of early Nile watercolour views.
