Moscow: Goslestekhizdat, 1937. Item #1411

427 pp.: ill. 25x17 cm. In original cloth with lettering on the front cover and the spine.

First and only edition. One of 1,800 copies. Edited by F. Bobrov, one of the leading figures in the Central Research Institute of Paper.
A comprehensive monograph on paper production in Russia and the USSR, as well as on Soviet and foreign inventions in this field. The author, David Tiagai (1886-1953), compiled a list of technology inventions and published it as part of the introduction. New types of Soviet paper products are placed in the respective chapter. Among them are waterproof paper and cardboard, produced since 1931 according to the methodology of the Central Research Institute of Paper (TsNIIB) (its activities are discussed in a separate chapter). In the list of molded pulp products, the author indicates: “In America, they make bottle stoppers of paper. Similar cardboard bottle stoppers were developed and are used in the USSR (inventor Griadasov; defended at the TsNIIB in Moscow).”
The author collected materials on the history of paper in Russia from the oldest paper books and mills. In particular, Tiagai provided information on workers’ strikes and wages of paper manufacturers in the pre-WWI period. He also devoted several chapters to the development of paper production in the 1920-1930s, including the Civil War and the NEP period. Thus, he set forth the types of paper the state had in 1921 and their number in tons. In one chapter, the author described paper manufacturers and their output in the early 1930s.
Until 1932, the USSR imported paper machinery. From the early 1930s, the country began to produce all the necessary equipment for the production of paper. The text features illustrations of the first Soviet mechanisms, pictures of paper production complexes, the interior of factories, work processes, etc. As a supplement, a section on new types of raw materials for paper production is placed at the end of the book. The text is complemented with photographs of the zoomed structure.
Waste paper recycling was an important socialist project. Young pioneers and little Octobrists were entrusted with collecting old and unnecessary printed materials and having them over to recycling points. According to statistics, as a result of the project, about 20 percent of paper was returned to production.

The only copy is located at Yale University.
