In the 1920s, the Soviet Union focused on strengthening the position of the state in relation to the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route. All expeditions were organized in this direction, exploiting airplanes and airships. Explorations of Antarctic and whaling in this region began in the 1940s only. Earlier Soviet publishers released translations of some foreign travel notes, works by historians and regional geographers. Among them were books by Shackleton and Byrd.
