Soviet military specialists had served in Egypt since the Suez crisis in the mid-1950s. In 1955, Egypt made a major arms deal with the Soviet Union and from then, groups of Egyptian officers were trained in Eastern Bloc countries. Also, Soviet military translators and officials were sent to service in Egypt.
Shortly before the Great Patriotic war started, the Military Institute of Foreign Languages had been opened. In 1942, the Department of Middle Eastern Languages was established. They developed a methodology for accelerated training of translators and provided materials for self-education as well.
Among specialists of the Institute was a colonel Grigory Krapiva who prepared many translators who served with Soviet military units in Egypt. His phrasebook contains common topics for everyday talks, city excursions, visits to a dentist, hairdressing salon, museum, post office and so on.
