An original etching created by Russian-American artist Marc Klionsky (1927–2017). He was born in Minsk, graduated from the Soviet Academy of Arts
in 1953 and lived in Leningrad. Klionsky turned to the Jewish topic, however the post-war country suffered a strong anti-Semitic atmosphere in official institutions and official art. Later, in 1974, Klionsky emigrated to the USA.
This portrait of a young woman carrying a gun is dedicated to the Vietnam War. It was one of the major military conflicts in which the USSR took part during Khrushchev's Thaw and the ongoing Cold War. The Soviet state provided technical and military support to the Northern Vietnamese forces that fought against anti-communist South Vietnam maintained by the USA.
