Item #1742

[Harbin]: Izd. Ekonomicheskim biuro KVZHD, 1926. 172x185,5 cm. One folding leaf backed on cloth. Very good, small tears, lower edge chipped, small lower right corner lost.

Scale 1:840 000. In Russian. Large folding map displaying northern Chinese territory, its borders with the Soviet Union and the Mongolian People’s Republic.

A railway system crossing Manchuria was built by the Russian Empire and Russian workers served on its stations and administrative departments. As the main administrative and trade center, Harbin was founded. After Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese War, a part of the system was transferred under control of Japan. After the power changed in Russia, the Bolsheviks tried to remain in the former leadership over Manchurian railways. They had declared their rule in Harbin in November 1917 but didn’t manage to stay in power. Manchuria in general and Harbin in particular were the essential territory for White emigrants. In 1924, diplomatic relations between these countries were restored. Gradually, the tsarist employees were replaced by Soviet ones – all Russian employees were required to have Soviet citizenship. Then Chinese politics had changed and 1926 became a year when the Chinese politicians began military actions to totally annex Manchurian railways. Following actions of both sides led to a 1929 military conflict. The main map displays settlements, hard coal mines, churches, water sources, a system of ditches and embankments Willow Palisade, fortifications Chenghis Khan Wall, railways, post and telegraph roads, bridges, piers, factories and landscape. Apart from the main map, there is a small-scale “Schematic map of Manchuria and surrounding territories” where the whole Manchuria is highlighted by color.
