A valuable source on the location and naming of Crimean settlements before the ethnic cleansing and cultural genocide of the 1940s. According to Wikipedia, the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic had approximately 1,126,800 inhabitants in 1940, of which 218,000 people, or 19,4 percent of the population, were Crimean Tatars. During the Second World War, the Crimean Peninsula was occupied by Nazi. Locals initially viewed the Germans as liberators from Stalinism, but they were severely repressed. So most survivors also fought on the side of the Soviet partisans. In 1944, the Soviet authorities returned control over the territory and blamed the whole ethnic group for collaboration with fascists. The same year, the forced deportation of Crimean
Tatars was carried out, sending victims to inland regions in Central Asia and Povolzhye. After the deportation of Crimean Tatars, all settlements with ethnic names were renamed with Russian words. For instance, the old city Karasubazar was renamed Belogorsk, town Biiuk-Onlar became Oktyabrskoe, town Ak-Sheikh was turned to Razdolnoe, village Biiuk-Muskomiia became Shirokoe. After the campaign some settlements just vanished, in particular the village Ongar-Naiman in Northern Crimea. This map features the Crimean republic before the war and local settlements are named originally.
The map was produced to indicate state farms and machine tractor stations that maintained agricultural machinery. Also, farms are marked depending on their specialization: harvesting fruits, grain or tobacco, raising sheep or poultry, etc.
