Moscow: Goslitizdat, 1939. Item #187

656 pp. 17,4x12 cm. In original cloth. Near fine.

This is the first edition of the play The Fifth Column and anthology of the writings by Ernest Hemingway (first published in
1938). The original edition was of forty-nine stories which was also the title. A few less sufficient stories were not included in this edition and two essays on the Spanish Civil War were added (written in 1937 and 1938) as well as the last written story On the American Dead in Spain (1939).

The Spanish Civil War strengthened Hemingway’s reputation and authority in USSR. In 1930s everyone knew he was writing a new novel (For Whom the Bell Tolls), a great amount of fans were waiting for a new book. But the translation came only 28 years later because 1930s were the years of increasing vigilance and intolerance to ideological ‘flaws’ of Western writers. Nevertheless this play and stories were published a year after the original publication.
