An art catalogue documenting one of Natalia Goncharova’s final exhibitions. The retrospective was curated by a Polish-born art historian Waldemar George (1893-1970) and organized at Galeria De L’Institut in Paris in May 1956. The exhibition showcased 30 pieces, including a limited collection of Rayist paintings & drawings Natalia created specifically for the event. This exhibition marked one of Goncharova’s last personal showcases, occurring six years before her passing in Paris.
The edition opens with a foreword by Waldemar George, offering a brief overview of Natalia’s oeuvre. The catalogue includes a list of exhibits (with dates indicated) and features reproductions of eight pieces, including Femme en Bleu (1908), La Tisseuse (1910), and Les Chats (1910).
Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962) was a leading artist of the Russian avant-garde movement during the early 20th century. Having originally trained as a sculptor, Goncharova turned to painting ca. 1902 and, along with fellow artist Mikhail Larionov (1881-1964) who was to become her lifelong companion, she developed a highly colorful painting technique in a variety of styles (impressionism, neo primitivism, cubism, rayism, and futurism). During her early career, Goncharova exhibited her paintings widely in Russia and later in Paris, Spain, Rome, London, Tokyo and New York, later making Paris her long-term home (from c. 1919 onwards). She was a prolific painter, continuing to paint into the late 1950s despite the onset of crippling arthritis.
