Very rare as a thin interwar children’s book of a large format.

This book was translated from Jewish to Ukrainian by historian and bibliographer Boris Butnik-Siverskii (1901-1983). In the early years of the Soviet period, Butnik-Siverskii served in the All-Ukrainian Committee for the Protection of Antiquities and Art. In 1921, he started research of children’s art and continued it in the Academy of Science in the following years. He published several works on principles of illustrations in juvenile literature. In parallel, Butnik-Siverskii
studied Bolshevik posters of the Civil war and Ukrainian folklore.
Drawings were created by Ukrainian artist Boris Kriukow (1895-1967). Graduated from the Kiev Art School in 1918, he became one of the most prolific
Ukrainian illustrators, contributing to over 500 books in the interwar period. In 1943, he moved to Lviv and then emigrated to Argentina where he continued illustrating books.
The large-format lithographic children’s book about lost and found kitten living within a Jewish family. The edition was constructed in a common style of the 1920s children’s books: people and objects were located without background, with minimal decoration. The artist placed only one sentence per the whole double-page spread but drew the main character (child) numerous times, producing a kind of comic strip.
