Item #2142

Moscow; Kharkiv: Ukrainskiy Rabotnik, 1931. 59, [5] p. 25x17,5 cm. Original wrappers. Occasional foxing on the top of the front wrapper, partly uncut.
Very good condition.

An interesting survival – this technical edition was
supposed to be distributed among the brigades
of Dneprostroi in 1930s, with the half of the printrun
produced in Ukrainian and half in Russian. Our
part is from Russian part of the print-run.
Dneprostroi meant the construction of the
Dnieper Hydroelectric Station, one of the giants
of the Soviet industrializations and the pride of
the first five-year plan. It was a “powerful and
unruly river harnessed and taken in service to
the proletariat”. Since 1925, the Soviet Union has
released a lot of books praising this project on
different stages. Among them are ‘Tragic Night’
designed by S. Telingater, ‘Water Giant’ designed
by S. Obolenskii, photobooks with similar titles
‘Dneprostroi’, ‘Dniprobud’, ‘Dneprostroi and the
New Zaporizhzhia’ designed by N. Mishchenko,
G. Epifanov, M. Kirnarsky, et al., various children’s
books, including four editions of Marshak’s poems
‘War with the Dnieper River’, excursion guides and
numerous technical bulletins. Impressive images
of the dam were included in almost all editions
and ephemera devoted to triumphal successes of
industrialization.
In the preface the chief engineer of the
construction Boris Vedeneev to this edition the
author straightforwardly admits that Dneprostroi
as the first project in USSR that uses concrete
on such large scale, owes it to the American
specialists involved in construction (namely
Cooper company). The book could be regarded as
one of the first manuals for concrete workers on
the matter.
The edition features 20 photos of the work
process, the construction sites of Dneprostroi
with some interesting shots, not necessarily
found in the official editions dedicated to the
Plant construction.
The supplement at the back of the book is
dedicated to the ‘concrete composition’ with the
exact amounts of the ingredients needed.

No copies recorded in the Worldcat.
