In the summer of 1920, large fires broke out in
various regions of the Russian Republic, including
settlements, industrial facilities, and forests. On
August 10, 1920, the NKVD sent out a circular
to all the executive committees demanding the
most energetic fight against fires. Nevertheless,
the problem persisted in the next years, and in
1924 alone more than 70,000 fires were recorded
across the USSR. Against this background, Soviet
authorities undertook a number of measures to
tackle the issue and ordered, among other things,
to disseminate information on ways to protect
against fire among peasantry.
Published in 1926, this brochure represents an
early Soviet guide for peasants on protecting
wooden buildings from fire. The edition, compiled
by the Soviet engineer A. Skachkov, is the fourth
issue of the series “Peasant's Insurance Library”,
which was intended to popularize information on
methods of defending rural property from various
threats. The book consists of three sections
and suggests 3 methods of protecting wooden
buildings from fire: plastering wooden walls with
different compounds, cladding of wooden walls
with various roofing fireproof materials, and
lining of wooden walls with stone fire-resistant
materials. Interestingly, the author distinguishes
the latter as the most effective way of protecting
from fire. In the edition, Skachkov offers an
overview of different materials that can be used
for the aforementioned methods and provides
instructions on their proper application to the
building. The brochure also includes 6 schemes
showing wall sections as well as calculations of
the number of bricks, mortar, and days necessary
for facing wooden outer walls of a hut.
