The work was written by Georgian linguist and historian Akakii Shanidze (1887-1987). Initially, Shanidze was a student of Nikolai Marr, he graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1913. By 1917, Shanidze turned from Marr’s the Japhetic theory. Shanidze became one of the founders of scientific Kartvelology of the 20th century, whose works influenced the study of Kartvelian languages in the USSR and abroad. Shanidze’s works are devoted to the synchronous and diachronic study of the Kartvelian languages, the study and publication of ancient Georgian monuments, the dialectology of the Georgian language, the problem of Caucasian Albania and its writing.
According to modern data, Caucasian Albania is a former state located on the territory of modern Azerbaijan, Georgia and Dagestan. In this paper, Shanidze limited his study by an ethnic group living along the Kura river on the territory of Azerbaijani SSR, near the borders with Georgia and Armenia. After the Arab invasion in the 8th century, Caucasian Albania ceased to exist and the national writing system gradually decayed.
Shanidze elaborates on phonetics and morphology of the lost language, comparing Armenian and Georgian antique sources. He referred to his previous publications “Order of letters in the Georgian, Armenian and Albanian alphabets” (1957), “New Data on Caucasian Albanian Alphabet” (1959) which accompanied discoveries of Albanian inscriptions on stone and ceramics in 1948. This edition contains inserts with reproduction of Albanian alphabet from a 15th-century Armenian manuscript, photographs of inscriptions left on a stone plate and a clay candlestick.
An early separate account on the language of Caucasian Albanians.
