A catalogue of the exhibition of Eugene Lancerey’s works created during an ethnographic expedition to Zangezur in the summer of 1926. The exhibition, delayed by the October earthquake, opened on December 22, 1926, at the State Museum of Armenia. Attendees included Museum Director R. Drampyan and Armenian CEC Chairman A. Karinyan. The exhibition featured 66 paintings and sketches, along with around 20 pages from Lancerey’s drawing album. A similar exhibition, "Zangezur," was held from February 20 to March 6, 1927, in Tbilisi’s “Hayartun” and later in Baku.
Eugene Lancerey, a Russian graphic artist and painter, moved to Georgia after the start of the Russian Civil War and remained there until 1934. While in Tbilisi, he taught at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and illustrated Tolstoy's Caucasian novellas. On March 25, 1926, A. Karinyan invited him on an expedition to Zangezur, marking the first time a professional artist joined a mission to the area. After getting a two-month leave from the Academy, Eugene traveled to Yerevan on June 15. From July 1, Lancerey, Karinyan, and a police officer spent eight weeks visiting Nakhichevan, Kelani, Shagat, Shaki, Karakilise, Goris, Tatev, Arachadzor, Kapan, Agarak, Artsvanik, Yegvard, Khndzoresk, Darichichag, Lake Sevan, etc. Throughout the expedition, Lancerey created around 100 works, capturing landscapes, monasteries, local people, and ethnography. He returned to Tbilisi on August 18 and began preparing his Armenian sketches for publication. Some of these sketches were later developed into paintings (now in the National Gallery of Armenia) or used in illustrations for the Moscow magazine Krasnaya Niva, though a separate publication of his drawings was declined by Zakkniga.
The catalogue, published a few months after Lancerey’s return from the expedition, is organized into several sections: Goris, Khndzoresk, Sisian, Tatev, Kapan, Yerevan, Darachichag, Lake Sevan, Dilizhan, and Nakhichevan. At the suggestion of Museum Director R. Drampyan, the catalogue features three full-page autolithographs, printed with an additional greenish tone at the Tiflis University Press. The edition also includes three black-and-white headpieces: "Head of an Armenian Woman" (on the title page), "Profile of an Old Man" (p. 10), and "Tatev Monastery" (p. 14). The text is accompanied by Lancerey’s nine extensive notes and several smaller commentaries, explaining depicted scenes and working conditions. Overall, an important catalogue of the exhibition of works created by Lancerey during his 1926 expedition to Zangezur.
