The magazine was published weekly in 1910, whilst in the previous year, the first year of the publication, it was produced monthly.
The complete set of the issues, that came out in 1910, before the magazine was shut down by the authorities, of the most influential Jewish periodical at the time.
One of the main contributors of the magazine were Sara Trostkaya, Semyon Doubnov, Grigoriy Portugalov, Semyon An-Skiy. The periodical was a semi-official organ of the Jewish community in Russia, that covered all the topics that were of importance to the community. The chronicle of events included the reports of the correspondent of the ‘Jewish mir’ in Duma, the letters from the provinces and the reports from abroad – the news of Canadian, Hungarian, American, French, German etc diasporas could be found in most issues.
The magazine was not associated with any political movement, but it has covered the activity of Zionists as well as less radical political movements from the other side of the spectrum. The economics and juridical section were aimed at covering the changes in these fields, while the separate section was dedicated to the changes of the laws of the Empire in regards to Jewish question and in general. A number of articles are dedicated to antisemitism.
The humour section is placed at the end of each issue, for example the very last publication, printed in issue N18, 1910 is called ‘Aero-jews’, in which the author O.L.D’Or is mocking public’s prejudice against the pilots and aviation in general, with the claimed rumours, that the planes themselves are Jewish and that they would help Jewish people to get over the Pale. The piece ends with the phrase ‘Черта осѣдлости трещала’ [i.e. The Pale was starting to crack].
The magazine was shut down in 1910 under the excuse of being against ‘Enhanced (emergency) security situation’ – the euphemism used by the police and the authorities since the 1880s in Russia to conduct the repressions and restrictions if required by the government and the elite.
