A perfect example of the pre-WWI bibliophile edition: Vassiliy Andreevich Vereschagin (1859-1931), the famous bibliophile, collector, the founder of ‘Starye gody’ and ‘Russkiy bibliofil’ magazines, have published the collection of his historical essays with the emphasis of different aspects of Russian art history. He organized the “Circle of Lovers of Russian Fine Publications” in 1903 and was the permanent leader of this first legally formalized bibliophile organization. Vereshchagin is the author of many major bibliographic works, including: “Russian illustrated publications of the 18th and 19th centuries (1720-1870)” (1898), “Materials for the bibliography of Russian illustrated publications” (1908). He wrote one of the first books about Russian ex-libris - “Russian Book Plate” (1902).
This edition is largely focused on the first half of 19th century, with articles like “The Ruined Nest” (about the estate of the princes Golitsyn), “Women’s fashions of Alexander’s time”, “Essay on the creativity of P.-F. Tomir”, “Russian and foreign books” etc.
In the preface the author has expressed his feelings about collecting, explaining his passion:
“From the mysterious distance, shrouded in the haze of poetry, our old reality rises with its alluring memories: the “gracious sincerity” of the word and the spontaneity of thought, the charm of the former attire and the grace of the gesture, the cutesy curtsy of the minuet... And the charm of youth and sadness emanates from this unknown distance loss. We are filled with the past... From the dull mediocrity of our time... we seem to be striving to escape into another world, where we lived more fully and felt more nobly.”
In 1921 Vereschagin immigrated and has led the Paris-based ‘Society of Friends of Russian Books’, the bibliophile organization.
