This interesting book offers topical solutions in late Stalinist interior design that were useful for officials or honored intelligentsia that lived in apartments of 2, 3 or more rooms. Regular Soviet families were not allowed to own such residential areas.
The collection of articles written by architects Sergei Alekseev, Olga Baiar, Raisa Blashkevich, Mikhail Makotinskii and Lazar Cherikover. Together with architect A. Vlasov and artist I. Voeikova, they observed Moscow multi-storey buildings constructed mainly in 1946-1952..
The articles are dedicated to room planning, finishing, color design, built-in wardrobes, kitchen equipment, furniture, lighting, wallpapers and textile. The book reproduces numerous photographs and schemes of Moscow apartments with architects and addresses captioned. It is particularly interesting that a finishing section contains examples of Stalinist classicist molding designs, including those installed in the Chechulin’s high-rise building on Kotelnicheskaya embankment. The edition shows door designs and parquet patterns. Pictures of furniture are captioned with the name of Soviet furniture factories.
Three colorful illustrations by architect O. Pshenichnikova are printed on separate leaves and feature interior solutions.
Copies are located in Columbia, Princeton, Yale, California, Harvard, Illinois, New York Universities and NYPL.
