Annual anti-Bolshevik edition published for subscribers of the newspaper ‘Hromads’kii holos’. Both editions came out under the Ukrainian Socialist-Radical Party that existed in the interwar period. After the USSR annexed Western Ukraine in 1939, the USRP like other local political parties was forced to disband. All their publications ceased.
The calendar design resembles contemporary Communist periodicals. An upper image features two men operating an artillery gun, as Bolshevik revolutionary illustrations. A lower one shows a plowman standing next to his tool, and agriculture also is a common motif in Communist images. Despite that, text materials of every issue were imbued with anti-Bolsheviks propaganda.
The issue includes essays on the establishment of Ukrainian nationalist organizations in the early 20th century and the movement in 1917, founding documents of the Ukrainian Socialist-Radical Party. Texts are complemented with portraits of Mykhailo Hrushevsky, Volodymyr Vynnychenko, Ivan Kotliarevsky, Ukrainian emigre women F. Doroshenko, M. Palekh, Tracheva. Some texts were devoted to West Ukrainian women’s organizations. They are illustrated with group photographs and supplemented by advertisements for the newly formed periodicals ‘Zhinochyi holos’ [Women’s Voice] and ‘Kalendar Zhinochoi hromady’ [Calendar of Women’s Association]. The latter features a picture of delegates from the Second Regional Congress of Ukrainian Working Women (1937).
Reviewing international events, the editorial writes that “in Stalin’s tsardom there is still the same horror”, repressions toward ordinary people and high-rank party officials, including Pavel Postyshev, Mendel Khatayevich, Stanisław Kosior. All the three were organizers of Holodomor; they were murdered during the Purge.
A colorful illustrated advertisement was printed on a separate leaf and inserted just before the title page. It promotes cacao powder ‘Enrilio’ and contains simple recipes on the rear side. Other (monochrome) advertisements are published at the end of the periodical and the back cover. Ads for binderies, bookstores and periodicals are given among cosmetics, local cooperatives and banks. The edition actually included a 1938 calendar and also a directory of some Lviv enterprisers with their addresses.
