Scarce. First edition. 1 of 2,100 copies. A comprehensive study of the construction of the bathhouses written by the Soviet architect Andrey Kryachkov (1876-1950).
Based on Kryachkov’s designs over 100 large buildings and structures were erected in the cities of Siberia, many of which bear the status of historical and cultural monuments of federal and local significance, including House of Science (1911-1912) in Tomsk and Scientific Library of Tomsk State University (1912-1914). The book was published in 1932, at the end of the first five-year plan when, together with body hygiene and physical education, construction of bathhouses became an issue of major importance. This focus on bath facilities was largely determined by the small number of bathhouses across the USSR and, as a result, their low attendance. For example, in 1929, the Ural region per 1,000 inhabitants had 5 visits per year per person. In this edition, the author, using collected materials and observations of the baths, as well as data from Russian and foreign literature, makes an attempt to systematize information and provide a guide for calculating and designing bathhouses. The book opens with a short historical outline of the development of the bathing business and proceeds with the detailed description of different types of bathhouses: modern, village, specialized, etc. The author provides data on the calculation of water supply, water warming, and pool structures and, most importantly, makes an attempt to find an enlarged meter module for the main types of bath buildings. The edition consists of nine sections and reviews each and every step of bathhouse construction from developing sewage system to design of baths, swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), artificial baths, beaches, pools and shower pavilions, as well as their structures, inventory and calculation. The book includes numerous black and white schemes, projects, and photographs showcasing various elements of bathhouses in the 1930s Soviet Union and abroad (including Leningrad bathhouses of Narvsky district, cabins in a bathhouse in Frankfurt, a pool in the bathhouse of Proletariat district, Moscow, etc.). This material is particularly valuable considering that most of the bathing facilities depicted in the edition were either demolished or are currently non-functional.
Overall, a comprehensive study of the construction of bathhouses.
