One of the early Soviet editions on gynecological mud treatment. The book was based on the practice of the Essentuki mud resort and the Essentuki clinic of the Balneological Institute. In Russia, the mud vaginal tampon treatment was first introduced by professor Alexei Lebedev in 1923. He passed away the same year, but A. Volosovich managed to give a speech about their experiments. The method was spread between Soviet resorts and other medical institutions. Volosovich was among its active promoters and treated 126 patients in 1925.
In this book, Volosovich and Novitskii describe the history of this practice, give practical instructions, according to Lebedev, Volosovich and other gynecologists, list indications and contraindications for mud treatment of various women’s diseases, mention early Soviet clinics with this method applied.
The foreword was written by gynecologist Viktorin Gruzdev (1866-1938). He studied at the Military Medical Academy working at the Manasein clinic and then entered the clinic of gynecologist Alexei Lebedev. Gruzdev was first the resident of the gynecological department, then he was in charge of the maternity department of the clinic. He trained in 25 European clinics. In 1899, he submitted documents for participation in the competition for the Department of Obstetrics and Women’s Diseases of Kazan University and became an extraordinary professor the following year. He is the author of more than 100 scientific works and is considered a compiler of one of the best Russian manuals on obstetrics and women’s diseases. Gruzdev offered this book for Kazan Medical Journal and became its editor.
