Overall good condition. Spots on the front cover, restoration of front cover. Minor defects to the back cover. Damp stain through the lower edge of the brochure. Owner’s mark in pencil on the cover.

Сonstructivist cover in black and white depicts a confused and depressive alcoholic finishing his 5th bottle, drawn in satirical and edgy manner. The cover art is signed Nerubenko. Volodymyr
Nerubenko (1905 — 1944) was a Ukrainian illustrator, mostly active during late 1920’s and early 1930’s in caricatures and book illustration. It’s known that at least 4 other books were printed with his design. Nerubenko’s artistic approach was in demand during the decade. His works appeared on the covers of the iconic Perets satirical magazine. Nerubenko died in WWII battles.

The author of the brochure, Illia Shtrum (1880—1946) was a Ukrainian medic, professor who rose to the head of Kharkiv Medical University and was known as a prolific science enthusiast. Starting in his youth as a revolutionary, Shtrum continued his fierce battle later in his life — but with the medical arms, aiming to protect public health. His main focus was epidemiology, disease prevention and hygiene. Working together with such figures like Russian N. Semashko, Shtrum created state-wide hygiene care and developed professional medical education in the UkSSR.
An interesting early Soviet anti-alcohol propaganda in Ukrainian.
