Item #2329

Kyiv: State Publishing House of Fine Arts and Musical Literature of the Ukrainian SSR, 1960. [65] p., 176 l. ill. 29.7×23.5 cm. Original illustrated binding. Spine is slightly scuffed, the inscription in Ukrainian (Lviv, 1962) on the first endpaper, otherwise good. No dust-jacket. First edition. In Russian and Ukrainian.

The encyclopedia on the folk ornament and embroidery, this 1960 album is one of the best books on the subject. It features more than 250 full-page color illustrations of the fabrics from the state museum collections as well as the artists’ sketches from the works they have encountered in the different regions of Ukraine. One of the artists, who has commissioned her sketches for this album was I.F. Krasitskaya, distant relative of Taras Schevchenko.

The album covers the historic embroidery as well as up-to-date. The oldest samples in the albums are from XVIIIth century (at that time, and even in XVIIth century the homemade fabrics were made in Halychyna, Chernihiv, Poltava, silk workshops existed in Brody). In XXth century the centers of production moved to Reshetilovka (Poltava region), Degtyari (Chernihiv region), Boguslav (Kiev region), Klembovka (Vinnytsia region), Kosiv (Stanislav region), Glyniany (Lviv region), etc.

The traditional ornaments in Soviet works are supplemented with the official symbols of the state, like on the carpet from Chernihiv region, that is commemorating the 40 years of the existence of Ukrainian SSR (see photo). The overall design of the book is overlooked by Vassily Kasiian. Born in Galicia, artist Vasil’ Kasiian (1896-1976) emigrated to the USSR in 1923 and taught in the Kiev Art Institute. In 1930, he moved to Kharkov where he took part in the organization of the Ukrainian Printing Institute
that followed the principles of VKHUTEMAS. He designed books and posters, working in various engraving techniques.
