An extremely rare catalogue published by the Ministry of Automobile Transport of the Ukrainian SSR to standardize and regulate the attire of Ukrainian transport workers. Compiled in accordance with order #110 of the Ministry of Automobile Transport of the Ukrainian SSR (15.05.1986), the catalogue was likely not available to the general public and was exclusively distributed to employees within the Ministry’s transport system.
Over the years, transport workers’ uniforms in the USSR evolved in response to cultural trends and economic conditions. By the 1980s, Soviet textile production remained significant, but the industry was already feeling the strain of raw material shortages and technological stagnation. Soviet factories primarily produced cotton, wool, and linen fabrics, yet without access to modern materials, domestic textiles often lagged behind their Western
counterparts in quality.
The catalogue provides a detailed, standardized description of official transport uniforms, including their components, fabric specifications, and color requirements for employees of enterprises, organizations, and departments under the Ministry of Automobile Transport of the Ukrainian SSR. It also outlines rank insignia, eligibility criteria for subsidized uniform purchases, and distribution procedures. The catalogue’s illustrations showcase precise uniform designs, with specific fabric article numbers and color guidelines. For instance, the standard uniform for drivers and field personnel was strictly dark blue, while summer uniforms for drivers were made from Orbita, a domestically produced denim intended as a low-cost, lower-quality alternative to American Levi’s denim. Most uniforms were crafted from Soviet-made wool, silk, drape, and water-repellent fabrics, with, apparently, no imported material allowed.
Overall, a rare catalogue of uniforms for Ukrainian transport workers.
