Scarce. Fourth edition. Text in Russian.

A richly illustrated and expanded fourth edition of Pyotr Strakhov’s renowned work, offering a comprehensive look at Soviet-era standards for designing and constructing agricultural
and communal buildings. Originally published in 1908, Strakhov’s pioneering book quickly became a staple for rural builders and construction professionals, prompting three further editions and remaining a crucial resource for decades. This final edition draws on the latest Soviet and international literature, enriching the text with new chapters, illustrations, diagrams, schemes, and calculations. The guide mostly covers agricultural construction topics, including livestock shelters, farm service structures, greenhouses, storage facilities, and estate layouts. Strakhov provides practical advice on constructing buildings to withstand Soviet climate conditions, recommending open stacks for hay storage and advising that bread be stored in light sheds or barns rather than in bins. In one of the most intriguing sections, Strakhov delves into the estimated costs of constructing various farm buildings in the
Soviet Union, offering detailed price breakdowns per cubic meter for houses, barns, pigsties, granaries, and cattle yards. The edition includes 640 meticulously drawn plans, illustrations, and diagrams, showing a variety of foreign, pre-revolutionary, and Soviet-era buildings such as stables, chicken coops, greenhouses, sheepfolds, manure pits, grain dryers, storage facilities, brooder houses, laundries, state farms, forges, sheds etc.

Pyotr Strakhov (1869–1934) was a mechanical engineer and professor at the Petrovskaya Agricultural Academy. After completing his engineering studies in 1892, Strakhov taught
architectural design at the Moscow Technical School. His work played a crucial role in popularizing agricultural construction and became the first comprehensive resource on the subject in pre-revolutionary Russia.

Overall, an interesting Soviet edition on the construction of agricultural buildings.
