An uncommon, illustrated Soviet-era manual devoted to engraving, written by V. Grigoriev and published by Krasnaya Gazeta in 1928. The book was designed for amateur printmakers and centers on etching (offort), described by the author as the most accessible engraving technique for beginners. The book opens with a foreword outlining the history of engraving, beginning with the year 1423. It introduces the two main types of engraving—relief and intaglio—and explains the principles behind various engraving methods. A large portion of the guide offers practical, step-by-step instructions on how to set up a home etching workshop. Readers are taught how to construct a wooden etching press, prepare iron plates for etching, apply and remove ground, transfer drawings, handle acids, and mix simple varnishes and lacquers. Grigoriev also provides alternative methods for printing without a press, making this manual especially adaptable for readers with limited resources. The text is supported by 33 black-and-white schematic illustrations, which visually clarify each phase of the process. These include diagrams of an etching press, side views of its construction, a layout of the workspace during printing, a method of printing without a press, and details such as iron plates
used for etching.
Overall, an interesting and accessible manual that offers valuable insight into early 20th-century amateur printmaking techniques.
