A richly-illustrated Soviet publication on visual propaganda, authored by Algimantas Pulokas and issued by the Vilnius branch of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Technical Aesthetics in 1971.
Founded in 1962, the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Technical Aesthetics (VNIITE) played a central role in developing Soviet design theory and practice. Tasked with aligning industrial production with aesthetic and functional standards, the institute focused on everything from household items to public
information systems. Its Vilnius branch, active in the Lithuanian SSR, emphasized visual communication in public and civic spaces, producing materials that combined graphic design, propaganda, and ergonomics to influence the everyday visual environment of Soviet citizens.
The album opens with an introductory letter outlining key guidelines for ensuring clear visual communication and effective use of informational media. It emphasizes the importance of standardized graphic forms, consistent fonts, and a unified color palette in the creation of agitational displays. The main body of the publication explores the challenges of placing visual materials in public and industrial environments to maximize their impact. It includes a comprehensive collection of around 70 full-page sketches, diagrams, and stand designs, complete with technical drawings for assembling wall-mounted panels. These are complemented by numerous color illustrations demonstrating how such stands can be integrated into various interior settings—from factory floors to office spaces—to display technical data, safety instructions, official directives, etc. The album also provides a recommended color scheme tailored to different thematic contexts, aiming to enhance the visual effectiveness of propaganda and informational displays.
