An unusual and compelling Russian émigré publication
about women in warfare, written by Sergey Shpakovsky and
published in Buenos Aires in 1969. The author was a former German
army captain and World War II veteran, who apparently emigrated
from the USSR after the October Revolution.
The book presents a rare compilation of little-known
accounts of women in warfare across centuries and continents.
Ranging from the legendary Amazons to the conflicts in Vietnam
and Indonesia, it highlights female combatants in the Napoleonic
Wars, members of the U.S. Women’s Army Corps during World War
I, and wartime roles of Chinese, Israeli, South American, German,
and Croatian women, as well as anti-Bolshevik fighters. These
biographical accounts are accompanied by a selection of extremely
rare black-and-white photographs, capturing women in uniform,
on the battlefield, and in powerful moments of defiance and duty.
Overall, a unique example of Russian postwar émigré
military historiography with a focus on women.
