An interesting Soviet children’s book and a prime example
of «party-approved» literature distributed to Georgian preschoolers
in the immediate postwar years. Designed as an alphabet primer,
the book combines reading exercises with short stories and verses
glorifying the Soviet victory, mocking the defeated enemy, and
praising Stalin for the country’s flourishing kindergartens. The text
is complemented with numerous colorful scenes of children waving
red flags, marching in military formation, and admiring portraits of
Lenin and Stalin.
The author, Tinatin Tumanishvili, was a noted Georgian
children’s writer and educator. She authored several influential
textbooks and story collections for preschool education, including
Nature and Labor (1933), Joy, the Georgian Alphabet (1945), and A
Collection of Active Rule-Based Games (1941). Her fictional works
for children include Playing Red Army (1942), My Garden (1945),
and Acquaintances (1943). A key figure in the cultural life of Soviet
Georgia, Tumanishvili also founded the Tbilisi Puppet Museum and
served as its first director.
Overall, a well-preserved Soviet children’s book and a
notable example of officially sanctioned literature.
