A remarkable piece of anti-Nazi wartime propaganda
written by M. Nesterovsky, submitted to the publishing house on
April 3, 1942, and published later that year in Novosibirsk.
At the time, Novosibirsk had become one of the Soviet
Union’s key rear strongholds. With the frontlines raging in the
west and Leningrad still under siege, the city absorbed evacuated
factories, research institutes, and thousands of refugees, emerging
as a major hub of wartime industry, culture, and propaganda.
In the brochure, Nesterovsky exposes the Nazi Party
as a political tool of Germany’s financial elite and imperialist
bourgeoisie. He outlines the ideological roots of fascism, sketches
a scathing biographical portrait of Hitler, and uses harsh language
to characterize top Nazi leaders—calling Hitler a “pederast” and
“epileptic,” and branding Göring a “mentally unstable morphine
addict and glutton.” The brochure also denounces Nazi antisemitism
and quotes Jewish actor and activist Solomon Mikhoels (1890-1948),
who described the Nazis as “orangutans who burst into history for
an hour to soil and destroy.” Mikhoels, head of the Jewish Anti-
Fascist Committee, would later fall victim to Stalin’s postwar anti-
Jewish campaign and be assassinated in 1948.
Interestingly, Nesterovsky also praises U.S. President
Franklin D. Roosevelt for his sharp analysis of Nazism—despite the
growing Cold War tensions between Stalin and the West after the
war. The brochure ends with a chilling summary of Hitler’s vision
to raise a generation of “inhuman butchers and brutal beasts,”
concluding with a call for the annihilation of the Nazi occupiers.
Overall, as a vivid example of Soviet wartime rhetoric.
