Artist Nikolai (Mykola) Samokish (1860-1944) was born into a noble family from the Cossacks of Chernigov province. Since childhood, he had been interested in the history of the southern lands of the Russian Empire and local folk art. Having a good visual memory, he memorized details of Ukrainian and Russian ornaments of furniture, books, fabrics and tableware. Since 1896, magnificent volumes of ‘The Grand Ducal and Imperial Hunt in Russia’ began to be released, exalting the art by Nikolai Samokish and Viktor Vasnetsov. They include an abundance of old Russian ornaments, along with the edition commonly known as “Crowned in Moscow. May 14, 1896”.
For this particular edition, the artist selected materials at the Ethnographic Museum in Poltava. He also attended an Archaeological Congress and an Exhibition of Folk Decorative Art that were held in Kharkov. There Samokish sketched many ornaments of Ukrainian folk embroidery of the 17–18th centuries, and later they were included in this edition. The illustrations mainly show the motifs of Poltava embroidery, made with silk, gold and colored threads.
Worldcat shows the only paper copy located in NYPL.
