Translated from English by Nadezhda Vol’pin (1900-1998), a Soviet translator, imagist poet, and the common-law wife of the poet Sergey Yesenin. She actively translated works by Ovid, Goethe, Walter Scott, Mérimée, Hugo, Galsworthy, Conan Doyle, Fenimore Cooper, Wells, as well as Turkmen poetry.
The first Russian translation of Upton Sinclair’s famous novel “Silvia’s Marriage,” published in the Soviet Union in 1925.
The constructivist style front wrapper features a stylized profile of a woman wearing a hat, with geometric shapes and urban buildings in the background. The design was produced by the Soviet self-taught graphic artist Vladimir Izenberg (1895-1969). In the 1920s, he worked extensively as a book artist, designing covers for Vladimir Mayakovsky’s Only the New (1925) and Yevgeny Zamyatin’s The Flea and The Society of Honorable Bell-Ringers (both 1926). He also created ex-libris for collectors and notable figures, including S. Anichkov, S. Timoshenko, A. Savonko, G. Nelyubin, K. Vorokhnovskaya, P. Gubar, and K. Margolin.
