A rare catalogue of the 8th exhibition of paintings and sculptures organized by the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR) in Moscow in 1926. The exhibition, titled “Life and Daily Life of the Peoples of the USSR”, showcased the results of a major expedition of over 100 artists sent by the Presidium of AKhRR to the autonomous and union republics. In total, it presented more than 1,800 works by 294 artists, including Mikhail Avilov, Abram Arkhipov, Fyodor Bogorodsky, Isaak Brodsky, Alexander Vakhrameev, Sergey Gerasimov, Mitrofan Grekov, Nikolai Dormidontov, and Boris Ioganson.
The catalogue opens with an introduction, followed by a listing of artists organized into fifteen thematic divisions - Siberia, Caucasus, Povolzhie, North, Uzbekistan, Sculpture, and others. Each entry includes the artist’s name and the title of the work. The catalogue concludes with an alphabetical index of participants, featuring brief biographies. The edition also features 92 black-and-white and monochrome reproductions of key exhibits.
AKhRR, later known as the Association of Artists of the Revolution, was a leading group in the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1933, uniting diverse artists under the banner of Communist ideals and laying the groundwork for Socialist Realism. Despite its revolutionary orientation, it successfully incorporated artists of the “old school,” growing from 80 to over 300 members in a decade. In the 1920s, exhibitions became the group’s primary activity, with roughly 70 organized across the USSR. AKhRR pioneered the thematic organization of exhibitions, a novel approach that achieved notable success with audiences.
