Limited edition of an early Soviet school of printing arts. One of 1.000 copies.
The first book by the author. It contains lectures that printmaking historian Aleksei Shults (1885—1942) gave to his students of the Alekseev State Printing School in 1922–1923. The book was printed by the students. These lectures covered history of different engraving techniques in the world and Russia, their technical features, reproduction methods, photographic process and development of the photograph, color photography. Aleksei Shults graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Department of Saint Petersburg University in 1911 and worked on paper microanalysis, microphotography, micro-projection in a laboratory. Before WWI, he began working at the State Bank and was assigned to its printing house. After the 1917 revolution Shults worked in the Expedition for Procurement of State Papers heading the art printing workshops (1918-1920). He was enrolled in the Petrograd Photo technical Institute in 1918 and graduated in 1924 with a diploma as a “printing engineer”. At the same time, he taught at the Alekseev State Printing School and was in charge of the graphics office. In the 1920s-1930s, Shults taught courses on printing production and book printing techniques at various educational institutions. Aleksei Shults died during the siege of Leningrad.
