Pavel Kovalevsky (1849-1931) was a Ukrainian and Russian psychiatrist and historian, conservative thinker. Originally from a small village close to Yekaterinoslav (now - Dnipro), he graduated from a theological school and then from the Yekaterinoslav Seminary. Nevertheless, he chose natural science as his profession. In 1869, P. I. Kovalevsky entered the medical faculty of Kharkiv University. From his second year, he conducted research in the laboratory of the Department of General Pathology, headed by I. N. Obolensky. It was there that he chose the problem of mental illness as his specialization. From 1879 onwards, he combined scientific research with practical work as a supernumerary resident physician in the psychiatric ward of the Kharkiv Zemstvo hospital. He stayed on at the University as a professor until the end of the century. He became the dean of Kharkiv University in 1889.
P. I. Kovalevsky wrote over 300 books, brochures, and journal articles on various issues of psychiatry and neuropathology. He became sespcailly prolific in the years 1900-1917, when he moved to Kazan, later to St-Petersburg. Among them are the following books: "A Guide to the Proper Care of the Mentally Ill," "Forensic Psychiatry," "Forensic Psychiatric Analyses" (three editions), "Mental Illnesses for Doctors and Lawyers," "Psychology of Sex," "Hygiene and Treatment of Mental and Nervous Diseases," "Fundamentals of the Mechanism of Mental Activity," "Textbook of Psychiatry for Students" (four editions), "Syphilis of the Brain and its Treatment," "Puerperal Psychoses," "Migraine and its Treatment." P. I. Kovalevsky published the first domestic textbook on psychiatry. P. I. Kovalevsky also enjoyed considerable authority as a historian. His works such as "The Peoples of the Caucasus," "The Conquest of the Caucasus by Russia," "History of Malorossiya,» and "History of Russia from a National Point of View" were of great interest and went through several editions (in Soviet times they were banned by censorship and were never published). P. I. Kovalevsky was one of the first to apply historical analysis to create psychological portraits of outstanding personalities. He gained well-deserved fame for his "Psychiatric Sketches] from History" (sometimes this book is published under the title "Psychiatric Studies from History"). During the Soviet era, this book was also banned from publication because it contradicted the Marxist view on the role of the individual in history and the concept of socioeconomic determinism.
Rare. First and second edition of the lectures are not found on the Worldcat.
