First edition of the first issue of the Journal of the Russian Chemical Society – the first society of such kind in pre-revolutionary Russia. In the next issue the famous Mendeleev’s On the Relation of the Properties to the Atomic Weights of the Elements would be printed. Dmitrrii Mendeleev was the founder and the chair of the Society. This issue includes the summary of his report ‘On the certainty of the composition of limiting saturated solutions’. D. I. Mendeleev believed that solutions are the best object of study for understanding the general phenomena of chemical interaction. He considered solubility as a chemical process leading to the formation in a solution of indefinite and definite compounds, between which there is no sharp boundary. Also included in the issue is the Articles of the Society and the list of members. Both are printed for the first time. Apart from Mendeleev’s report, the two articles are included in the issue: “Study on thymol” by A. Engelgardt and P. Lachinov and “About the products of the action of bromine vapor on silver salts of acids” by A. Borodin. At the end of the issue the ad from the publisher is placed. On the list of books we can see the first volume of ‘the Basics of Chemistry’ by Mendeleev advertised, which was already printed. Also ‘Analitical Chemistry’ and 2nd edition of the ‘Orcanic Chemistry’ by him are advertised as well.
