One of the early Soviet publications on AIDS.
The main author of the brochure was Nikolai Anatolievich Chayka , a prominent medical scientist (1941–). He originally graduated from the First Leningrad Medical Institute in 1964 and pursued further specialization in dermatovenereology and microbiology, earning his candidate of medical sciences degree in 1970. He established and led the Scientific Medical Information Department at the Institute from 1972 to 2013, which became one of the best information units in the country. Throughout his career, he contributed to numerous scientific publications and bulletins, and participated in multiple international conferences on HIV/AIDS. He also served as a consultant for the WHO European Office from 1989 to 2012, translating over 70 official WHO documents. Chayka received several awards for his contributions, including the Order of Friendship of Peoples in 1986. His bibliography on AIDS lists 15 books and dozens of publications. This book is aimed at the regular Soviet reader and accompanied with the striking images of the disease.

The content of the book covers various aspects of the immune system and its function, detailing the pathogens responsible for diseases, the development of AIDS, and the groups at risk for infection. It
discusses the progression from a few cases to a global pandemic, explores the multifaceted nature of AIDS, and provides guidance on recognizing the disease and preventive measures. Finally, it poses the question of whether it is possible to extinguish the “fire” of the epidemic.
