“This edition is the author’s adaptation for older children of two books by L. Kassil: ‘Conduct’ and ‘Shvambrania.’” The first edition of ‘Conduct’ appeared in 1930, in 1933 ‘Shvambrania’ was published as a separate book, and in 1936 edition, combining the two stories, appeared. In the 1940s and 1950s. the text of the book underwent significant changes: almost everything reminiscent of the Germans living in Pokrovsk was removed, pages devoted to state-run school anti-Semitism and wartime Germanophobia were removed, the words “Jew” and “Jew” were eliminated in many places, and the role of the Communist Party, represented by Commissar Chubarkov, who in early editions was portrayed almost as a popular character, was significantly strengthened. This edition is unedited. This is the first joint publication of Lev Kassil’s first two children’s books.
