One of the interesting issues that the Central Statistical Directorate published in the 1920s. Those editions covered abortions in 1925, urban nutrition in 1920—1924, handicraft industry in 1925, the All-Union Census of 1923, industrial enterprises for 1920, etc. Since 1925, all the data was transferred to the Moral Statistics Department. According to the foreword, the Soviet Union began to introduce statistics on suicide in 1922, but the spread was uneven. Civil registration system was founded in 1917 but staff started to record fatal suicide attempts after the Civil War was over. The first Soviet book of statistics on suicide contained data from 1922—1924, but generally. This particular book is more comprehensive. In this book, tables highlight data for different Soviet republics, so one could compare the number of cases recorded in Azerbaijan and Ukraine in the mid-1920s. The statistics considers age, sex, method used, motive for action, literacy level, class, wealth. The head of the Moral Statistics Department, M. Gernet published an essay where elaborates on dynamics, changes and reasons in suicides in the early USSR. In particular, this text includes datacompiled by months and weekdays. Reviewing the preference of methods depending on gender, Gernet writes that men frequently chose firearms while poisoning was more favorable for women. At the same time he notes with surprise frequent cases of self-immolation of Azerbaijani women in 1925—1926, regardless of age and social status.
