[EXPLAINING POLITICS TO THE MASSES] Tolkovatel’ politicheskikh slov dlia naroda [i.e. Dictionary of Political Worlds for the Folk].
Item #2695
Moscow: Tovarishch, 1906. 16 pp. 18,5 × 12 cm. In original printed wrappers. Minor tears of spine and front cover, soiling, otherwise very good.
The second edition. Extremely rare and fragile brochure. During the first Russian revolution of 1905, the language was enlarged with many words related to the political situation. For someone, it seemed like an explosion of unknown vocabulary that periodicals and posters used. Mass misunderstanding might block or even counterattack the revolutionary movement. The brochure introduced various political and economic words (for example, emancipation, prime minister, Bolsheviks), as well as words borrowed from other languages and actively used in speeches for masses: candidate, pessimism, culture, etc.
The first edition came out in 1905. Making the second edition cheaper for customers, the publisher hardly enlarged the number of words but printed a few of them on verso of the back cover. This addition includes such curious notes as “Student… a distinctive feature of Russian students is their participation in the political life of the country”.
