Part 1: Invertebrate animals: Tables I-XXIII., 1861. [4], IV, [46] p., 23 leaves of illustrations. : ill. Folio. 42x32 cm. Original cardboard binding. Brown stain on the lower part of the block throughout, not affecting the images on the plates. Otherwise in very good condition.

The first atlas of Invertebrate animals, produced in Russia has been manufactured in lithographic shop of Nikolai Besperchy. For the drawings of the specimen the engraver Nikolai Kulakov was invited, and the two artists have participated in partial coloring of the plates (present in our copy). Besperchy was a brother of Dmitri Besperchy (1825-1910), who was famous for creating watercolors of Ukrainian folk motifs. The atlas itself is the re-publication of Icones Zootomicae, that came out in Leipzig in 1857. For the Russian edition preface was written by Anatoly Bogdanov, who also edited the volume. Bogdanov
was a well-known pioneer of his field, zoologist, anthropologist, historian of zoology, one of the founders of Russian anthropology, founder of the first anthropological institutions in Russia, popularizer of
natural sciences, he worked as a professor at Moscow University for three decades, the present atlas was printed with the purpose of use in his classes. In his anthropological works, A. P. Bogdanov pointed out the fundamental difference between the units of racial classification and linguistic and ethnic categories. He criticized theories of racism and polygenism.
