Item #2723

Soviet Union, [1970-1980s]. 70x50 cm. Image is 38 cm in diameter. Gouache, paper. Very good condition.

The image shows African woman embracing her child shielding him away from the F14 fighter jets, flying over her shoulder.

Alexander Kurilovich (1928-2007) was a Soviet poster designer. He studied at the Rostov Art School (1946-1951) and the Kharkov Art Institute (1951-1957). He helped organize the creative workshop "AGITPLAKAT DON" and served as its editor. Since 1978, he has headed the "Agitplakat Dona" association. He is the author of many political propaganda posters: "FDJ. PEACE" (1950s), "We are always ready to help those who break the shackles of slavery!" (1976), "Glory to the hands of labor!" (1977), and "True to Lenin's precepts!" (1980). His agricultural, satirical, and anti-religious posters are also well-known: "Church sermons are nonsense, they bring people much trouble!" (1986), "A currency speculator does not like light. A coin is his source of light!" (1987), "Decree on the Separation of Church and State" (1980s), "The Fruits of Believers' Ignorance Are Like Mining Gold from Water!" (1980s), "Church Holidays Are Only Harmful. There's No Place for Them in Our Time!" (1980s).

In 1957–1976, 15 African countries established political regimes that maintained close relations with the USSR and met the criteria of “a country with a non-capitalist path of development.” A lot of artistic efforts of Soviet poster makers went into transmitting the anti-imperialistic message through such images.
