First Soviet edition of “The Home of the Blizzard” (1915) by Sir Douglas Mawson.

Remarkably for the 1930s, the Soviet preface to this book contains none of the usual class-based rhetoric or evaluations of bourgeois research. The editorial board of the Chief Directorate of the Northern Sea Route (Glavsevmorput; GUSMP) sticks to the facts, prefacing the text with a brief overview of the fate of Antarctic expeditions, including Mawson’s exploration in particular. Only at the very end of the preface, as if suddenly remembering its duty, the editor added a short paragraph about the Party and the immense work of the Soviet government in studying the Arctic.

The Glavsevmorput was the Soviet agency for running Arctic shipping and exploiting resources across the Far North. It traces its roots to AO Komseverput, a shipping company established by the Kolchak government in 1919 and subsequently nationalized by the Bolsheviks. The name Glavsevmorput was given to the organization in 1932. In the 1930s, it employed 35,000 men scattered all over the Arctic, besides the staff in Moscow and in other mainland cities. Overall management was assigned to the Arctic explorer Otto Schmidt. Glavsevmorput had its own Polar Air service Aviaarktika, headed by Mark Shevelev.

The similar cover and dust jacket designs were co-created by Boris Piatunin and Boris Smirnov. In the same year, Piatunin produced a noteworthy photomontage design for Perelman’s “Geometry for Entertainment” using his own portraits in illustrations. Smirnov was a skillful constructivist designer of household items (including maternity beds and cinema seats), interiors, industrial and public buildings, and a book illustrator.
