First Ukrainian edition of “Psohlavci” (1884) by Czech writer Alois Jirásek (1851–1930).

“The Dogheads” is one of Alois Jirásek’s most popular novels and it was widely read throughout Czechoslovakia. The first Russian translation was published in 1902 and later the work was reprinted multiple times.

After the Communist takeover in 1948, Jirásek’s works were actively promoted as a model of patriotism, by personal order of Klement Gottwald. Communists utilized his work, particularly the Hussites, to build legitimacy by presenting him as a chronicler of popular struggle against oppression. According to President Gottwald, Jirásek's writings taught the Czech people to understand their past correctly, strengthened their national consciousness, and filled them with effective optimism and faith in the creative powers of the nation.
